The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection contains around 1200 items, including gold and silver, enamel miniatures, gold boxes and mosaics. The galleries’ (rooms 70 – 73) constantly changing display includes a spectacular group of micromosaics – some of the finest in the world. This slideshow takes a look at some of these incredibly intricate works of artistry – and patience.
",
"The earliest micromosaics were made in Rome during the second half of the 18th century. The mosaics shown here showcase the virtuosity of the early micromosaicists, and give a glimpse into the world in which they were created. Rome, with its magnificent heritage and as the meeting point for culture-hungry northern Europeans, was the natural place of origin for this new technique.",

"On the original, Titian deliberately blurred the edges on the face using a technique known as sfumato, meaning soft or hazy, creating an image of a spirited girl with an ever-changing expression. Even a mosaicist of Moglia’s skill was constrained by his materials and obliged to set his glass tesserae line by line. While his version is remarkable, it is more static than the original painting."

"This micromosaic depicts Roman noblewoman Beatrice Cenci, executed at the age of 22 for her involvement in the murder of her father, following a lifetime of tragic abuse. "Mosaicists of the Vatican produced pictures on commission or for general sale, including subjects such as this cavalier. The portrait-like nature has parallels with the contemporary fashion of being photographed in historic costume. Tarantoni has used paint, now partly discoloured, to make the face more convincing. The tesserae that depict the stone wall are arranged in a way that is comparable to those used in the backgrounds of the first generation of micromosaicists (see first slide)."
